#16 UW Spoils #8 WSU Title, Playoff Hopes In Snow Bowl

It was a cold rainy night on the Polouse that ended up becoming a snow bowl. The 111th Apple Cup had more implications than controlling the state. Winner of the Apple Cup meant taking the Pac-12 North Title and punching their ticket to face Utah in the Pac-12 Championship. For WSU, winning out meant a chance at keeping their playoff hopes alive. But it would be all for not as Washington State would collapse when it mattered most. UW would destory Washington State 28 – 15 and win their 6th consecutive Apple Cup.

This isn’t the first demoralizing loss for Mike Leach and company. Since 2015, WSU has allowed the Huskies to run up more than 40 points in every contest. The Huskies would continue where they left off keeping the ball on the ground and, literally, running up the score. Leach’s follies in the Apple Cup is so bad, that he has never beat UW, even when they were ranked above the Huskies entering the game.

Quick Recap

The pocket was rather clean for Gardner Minshew II most of the game. Huskies would usually rush 3 and drop back the rest. But the Cougars could not seem to find anyone available. Combine that with bad snaps and dropped passes, and WSU found themselves in a hole fast. Minshew had been having a Heisman Candidate season. But facing the Husky defense, Minshew was rendered rather useless, throwing for 96 yards in the 1st half. Minshew would continue to Coug it in the 2nd, allowing UW to run away with the game.

UW would find success on the ground with Myles Gaskin. Gaskin has been delivering quite well in the Apple Cup with 9 career touchdowns against the Cougs and was a key factor for UW in beating WSU. Gaskin would seal the game mid way through the 4th with an 80 yard touch-down run. WSU would never come back.

Turnovers would also be the story for WSU. The Air Raid offense is not meant to be played in the snow, especially a micro blizzard. Gardner Minshew would throw 2 interceptions and the Cougars would tack on another fumble. UW would have their way on defense, destroying any chance WSU had at a come back.

Post-Season

UW will go on to face Utah in the Pac-12 Championship. Winner will go on to the Rose Bowl. UW beat Utah earlier this year in Salt Lake City 21 – 7. Expect the Huskies to continue where they leave off in the Pac-12 Championship.

For the Cougars, they will play another bowl game where they desperately need a win. Leach has done well bringing the team around. For recruting sake, the Cougars need a win if they want to have another chance to be in the top 10.
